Samsung's I7500 Android phone shreds in first hands-on video

Posted by admin Under mobile on Tuesday Apr 28, 2009

“Ahhh, much better. That last round of pictures just wouldn’t do. Say what you will about the Vietnamese rock music, this video is the best look at Samsung’s upcoming I7500 - the third Android device publicly announced, and the first to be made by someone other than HTC. Both D-pad and touchscreen input is available.  The device is running Android OS 1.5 swimmingly, and interestingly, bears the official model number “Capella 7200″ - perhaps given by a particular carrier. The specs for Samsung’s upcoming Android I7500, in case you’ve forgotten…

  • 3.2-inch HVGA capacitance OLED touchscreen
  • 5-megapixel camera (with LED flash)
  • GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth
  • 8GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot
  • 528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7200A CPU
  • Android OS 1.5
  • Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900Mhz), dual-band 3G (UMTS/HSDPA, likely 900Mhz and 2100Mhz bands)
  • €300 without contract on O2 Germany this July” via intomobile.com

Verizon XV6175

“Details are starting to firm up on the Verizon XV6175, a messaging-oriented Windows phone supposedly scheduled for release this summer. This has not yet been officially announced, but that hasn’t stopped information from leaking out on it. This device will supposedly be a version of the HTC Snap that has been modified to meet Verizon’s needs.Like its sister models, it will run Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard on a 528 MHz processor and include 128 MB of RAM.The XV6175 is expected to have a 2.4-inch, 320-by-240-pixel display and a QWERTY keyboard on its front. This form-factor will contribute to its focus on allowing users to easily exchange emails and text messages. It will certainly include wireless broadband, but Wi-Fi is less certain. Other features will include Bluetooth, GPS, a microSD card slot, and a 2.0 MPx camera.According to earlier reports,  Verizon will introduce this device in June. There is no word yet on pricing, but HTC created this design to be a low-cost option for carriers.Other versions of this model are supposedly on their way to a variety of wireless carriers, including T-Mobile USA.”via brighthand.com

“O2 Germany have officially announced the Samsung I7500 Android cellphone, the first device for both Samsung and the carrier.  Tipped over the weekend, the I7500 has a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, together with a 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen running at 320 x 480.
Other specs include GPS, WiFi b/g and HSPA, together with 40GB of storage (8GB internal; up to 32GB via a microSD card).  There’s also Bluetooth 2.0, a 1,500mAh battery and the usual bevy of Google applications and access to the Android Market.  The whole thing measures 115 x 56 x 11.9 mm, and still finds room for a 3.5mm headphone socket and microUSB port.
The Samsung I7500 will be available exclusively from O2 in Germany from June 2009.  Pricing for the handset itself has not been announced, but the carrier has confirmed that no specific tariffs or service plans will be required; buyers will be able to choose any from O2’s range.” Read the press release inside..

iPhone Dominates Mobile Ad Share, Android Catches Palm

Posted by admin Under mobile on Monday Apr 27, 2009

AdMob has released its March 2009 Mobile Metrics Report, which this time around focuses on Google Android smartphones–meaning, essentially, the T-Mobile G1, since new Android handsets are MIA lately. The AdMob report said Android is actually doing pretty well, with two percent of all US requests. That puts it in the fourth spot behind the iPhone, the BlackBerry Curve, and the BlackBerry Pearl. However, “fourth place” doesn’t mean a whole lot here when you compare it to the iPhone. “Both grew more quickly than the market, but iPhone growth was much faster than Android,” the report said. “To put some numbers to this, we found that Android traffic in the US grew an average of 47% per month since it launched five months ago while iPhone traffic in the US grew an average of 88% per month in the five months following the launch of their App Store.” Interestingly, Android has now caught Palm OS in overall smartphone OS market share; each company has six percent of the market. The iPhone leads with 50 percent, while RIM plays second fiddle at 22 percent. Meanwhile, Windows Mobile is sitting in third place at 11 percent.” via appscout.com

“The Nokia 5800 has proven a popular handset with great sales figures, but you may not have realised just how great those figures actually are. Nokia’s first touchscreen handset made up around 20% of all touchsv=creen handsets sold in Q1 2009. The figures come from Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo himself, Nokia’s CEO.
For their first attempt at a touchscreen smartphone this unbelievably successful by anyone’s standards. Early problems with the handset don’t appear to have dampened customers’ enthusiasm for it and that will have been helped by sensible pricing, which put the 5800 within the reach of many customers especially PAYG customers who may have been looking at more expensive touchscreen handsets like the iPhone or Pixon, but were unable to afford them. With the N97 due to be released within the next few months these figures can only bolster Nokia’s confidence that their touchscreen strategy is on a sound footing. ” via mobile-review.com

We’ll take a more detailed look at Nokia Messaging on S605th Edition in due course. The full release of Nokia messaging for S60 5th Edition is due in May. As such the current version should be considered a beta / preview release. The installation process has not yet been finalised or streamlined (you’ll need to follow the instructions carefully). Although the feature set will not change between now and the first formal release, the Nokia Messaging team are looking for feedback to help identify bugs and other problems. Pharos Traveler 127 Review at brighthand!

Posted by admin Under mobile on Wednesday Apr 22, 2009

Sample Windows Mobile Widget

The design is somewhat boxy, with the corners being only slightly rounded at the top and bottom. The phone isn’t ugly, but it isn’t sexy–it’s obviously meant to be a productivity tool for a mobile professional, with no added frills.
The exterior case has been finished with a “soft touch” feel that is comfortable to hold and doesn’t catch fingerprints and smudges. That also means that the phone isn’t slippery at all, and feels good in the hand. It’s about as wide a device as is comfortable to use with one hand, unless you’re manipulating the power switch. This is a slider at the top left edge of the phone, and it’s a real pain to use.
Waking and sleeping the device are a quick slide of the button, which I can do with one hand, reaching up with my index finger. Turning the device on or off is a two-handed operation though, because you have to hold the switch for several seconds and the ridges on the switch tend to dig in a big painfully. I’d rather hold the phone with one hand and then use the edge of my fingernail to slide and hold the switch.”
